Services
I'm available for both fiction and non-fiction editing, but please note I have a hard limit of 40,000 words. If your project is an anthology, journal, or other collection of smaller, unrelated works totalling over 40,000 words, I may be open to this contingent on your expected time frame. I'm unable to provide free samples, but I'm happy to read your project and give a brief consult on how I would approach it before committing to a contract.
Structural Editing - 5 cents per word
This is a developmental analysis which is more about examining whether the piece is cohesive, three-dimensional, and broadly achieving your vision, rather than giving specific line suggestions. It's also an examination of prose, or, in the case of non-fiction, whether word choice and sentence structure is appropriate for the intended audience.
Copyediting - 4 cents per word
If you're confident with the overall thesis of your project, copyediting involves going through line by line to ensure clarity and consistency. This may entail suggesting ways to restructure sentences for improved cadence, checking that internal details and logistical facts make sense, as well as correcting grammar, punctuation, syntax, and spelling. I follow Australian styles and I give a technical explanation for all edits.
Proofreading - 2 cents per word
For polished works, I will check for any erroneous punctuation, spelling, or missing words, and I can check for formatting issues in material which has already been typeset.

About
My first and last names are approximately pronounced "CHAR" and "FEHR-ker" respectively, and I use they/them pronouns.
I currently live in Melbourne. I'm a Quorum member of Meridian Australis, a small press focusing on publishing Australian speculative fiction. Along with literary studies, my academic background is in political science and digital ethics, and my personal background is in all manner of classic sci-fi, with a side of late-2000s platformer video games.
